what we did

ONE. Vegetable Tempura at the county fair? Why not.. (It was actually really, really good- but then gave me a stomach ache the next day. As can only be expected from a good plate of carnival food.)

TWO. There were also kangaroos at the fair- which was different. We didn't let Noah see them, however, due to a previous hysterical reaction to kangaroos at 2am while watching the Baby First channel. I am considering writing them a letter asking them to lease stop showing that segment after midnight, because my sleep-fighting baby's reaction to it is going to wind up giving me a heart attack.

THREE. The end of July and Halloween candy is out already. And up next week, Christmas trees?

FOUR. I finally got to eat a dish of beans right from the garden. They were mostly from my inlaws, but there were a handful from my own window garden as well. Delicious.

FIVE. The first cucumber from my garden was harvested. I think it was inhibiting the growth of the other cucumbers on the plant, so I cut if off the plant at about four and a half inches. I haven't eaten it yet.. I think there's supposed to be a special ceremony.

SIX. And biggest event of the week.. my child tricked herself into eating a vegetable (and did it again today). She suddenly told me she wanted "ants on a log," we actually had celery, and she even ate 70% of it!

inspired #8

to MAKE..
embroidered diy merit badges
embroidered diy merit badges @etsy
I don't know.. it's probably because I used to be a Girl Scout, but.. I love the idea of making my own merit badges. Maybe I'd make one for a record breaking number of hours of sleep lost- a pair of bloodshot eyes with thick black curved lines below each one. Ya, scary..

a LIKE..
gold cuillere a cafe old-fashioned teaspoon, starbucks
gold cuillere a cafe old-fashioned teaspoon @starbucks
I can't say that I would really want to spend $7 for one teaspoon.. but if I did, it would be this one. A gold glittery teaspoon? I love it..

to MAKE..
parmesan orzo veggie pasta
parmesan orzo veggie pasta @a little artsy
I love this recipe. I mean, I love it without the zucchini. You could also use feta cheese instead of parmesan. But, I guess that's turning it into more of a Greek pasta.. especially if you use kalamata olives. Yum.

to MAKE..
how to make paper flowers
how to make paper flowers @a beautiful mess
These paper flowers are really easy to make and might even look cute on (or around) a birthday cake. I wonder if my child would appreciate that at all? Maybe we could make them together.

being mom

Today I.. went grocery shopping- I spent $80 and saved $75 (without even using coupons). I high-fived my daughter for actually listening to her teachers when it was time to go back inside from playing. I made pudding. I did dishes. I swept and washed the entire kitchen floor- and moved everything to do it.

Later I'm going out to buy diapers. And maybe hotdogs while they are still on sale. I might also make dinner, but I don't know.. I don't want to push it.

I feel like such a mom.

Implements of.. massage?

Sometimes Lily gives me "massages" and occasionally Noah will get in on it too. Whenever it happens, it's always her idea.. and I mean, who am I to argue with a 4 year old? It actually entertains her/them for 5 to 10 minutes, I don't have to do anything but lie down, and some of it is actually relaxing.

Over the weekend, Lily wanted to give me a massage- and as the accommodating mother that I am, I let her. "Where have you been all my life," I asked her, as I lay down on the floor. She started out by using some semi-curved circular paddles from a game of catch and then moved on to matchbox cars. In the middle of it, she fell/threw herself on top of me and I oof-ed in discomfort. "Sorry, sorry," she laughed, as she got up. "That wasn't part of the massage." And then trotted off to find something else.

She walked by my head with a Minecraft pickaxe and said something like "I'm going to do something to your feet, don't worry it's relaxing." Oh, nothing.. I'm just going to use an axe on you.. it's fine. Relaxing even.

I love that kid.
